Why logistics leaders are embracing apprenticeships for administrative staff

Great logistics equals happy customers. Let’s look at how upskilling administration staff gives this a boost.

Which firms are setting the standards in the industry? It’s definitely the smartest logistics firms that constantly monitor quality and identify areas for improvement. As a result, they regularly modify operational practices to ensure they are always timely and efficient. Accurate record keeping is an important part of this process of continual improvement.

It’s no surprise these leading firms recognise investing in the skills development of administrative staff is essential. Competent staff equals a high quality, efficient and error-free administrative function to support the business. And here is the good news – you too can get onboard with fully funded training for team members in administration roles.

Logistics effectiveness goes beyond drivers

With the speed of change – from the rise in home shopping right through to AI – it has never been more crucial to recruit and retain talent.

The leading logistics firms know effectiveness goes far beyond the drivers out on the front line.  Present and future success hinges equally on depot and office-based personnel.

Your firm has the opportunity to develop the next generation of managers and the future stars of logistics through FUNDED training. Outstanding talent will want to work for employers with structured, industry-recognised training and career progression. Apprenticeships offer a single solution to these criteria.

Fast Track Your Competitive Edge

Fast track your competitive edge by adopting apprenticeships to help transform performance.

Business administration in logistics is a crucial role as the job function impacts productivity and customer satisfaction. An apprenticeship in business administration provides staff with the skills to ensure the following:

  • Competence in IT, business systems and effective communications and documentation
  • Accurate and effective record keeping, continuous improvement through presenting solutions to management
  • Coaching and reviewing the work of others through positive relationships
  • Improved decision making through a proactive approach
  • Agility and authority appropriately implemented, positive use of social media
  • Quality improvement through ongoing process review and improved complaints handling
  • Fantastic workplace behaviour from meeting deadlines, setting an example for others in the workplace and effectively  managing resources

The Super Stars of Tomorrow

To help your newly-enrolled employee become a super star they will do far more than master the skills listed above.

Staff who undertake the business administrator apprenticeship are coached to display behaviours that will evolve them into role models.

The result is a positive contribution to team relations, alongside in-depth knowledge of your organisation and its wider business environment.

TRS Apprentice Jessica Sets the Standard

Jessica Day is our own LGV planner here at TRS. The 27-year-old joined us in June 2021. She began by assisting the recruitment manager signing up participants to driving apprenticeships. Within months Jessica was taking on increased responsibility, booking tests and medicals for drivers.

As her knowledge grew so did Jessica’s role. She put it to work by assisting the head of TRS’s driver training academy.

Before long Jessica was playing a significant role in planning complex driver training schedules across apprenticeships, commercial students and government-funded bootcamps.

Whilst marching through the ranks, Jessica has managed to complete her own level 3 business administrator apprenticeship.  She says:

“I have been running a project to implement a more efficient onboarding experience for LGV apprentices with learning differences.  I gained a distinction for this project! My hard work and the apprenticeship training I received allowed me to progress from a junior admin assistant to heading up the whole LGV driver training planning process.”

Jessica’s manager, Jayne Beckett, head of compliance and business support, adds:

“Business administration is a significant function in any organisation; especially one that is open to new ideas and approaches. Investing in staff brings their loyalty, commitment and an impact to the bottom line and even corporate social responsibility.

“Jessica has had an impact in all these areas.  With her newly-acquired qualification spurring her on, she has had a direct impact on productivity at TRS and its success as a logistics training organisation.”

Women in Logistics

With Jessica’s help TRS is increasing the number of women in logistics. Jessica has moved the needle on our strategic objective, by increasing the number of women taking part in LGV training four-fold to nearly 10%.

Jessica and our two female LGV driver trainers are fabulous role models for any woman considering a career in the industry.
